A full day on Vancouver Island: a ferry crossing, world-famous gardens and the British charm of Victoria.
Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and Canada's most British city: afternoon tea, Victorian brick buildings, immaculate gardens and an inner harbour where seaplanes land every fifteen minutes. It sits on Vancouver Island, and getting there is already half the experience.
The ferry crossing takes about an hour and a half between forest-covered islands in the Strait of Georgia. It's common to spot seals, bald eagles and, with luck, orcas. The ferry has a cafeteria, an outdoor deck and Wi-Fi — and it's one of the parts travellers remember most.
On the other side: Butchart Gardens, 22 hectares built inside a former limestone quarry, now a National Historic Site of Canada. The Sunken Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden change completely from month to month, and it's worth setting aside at least two hours there.
Early departure toward the Tsawwassen terminal, about 45 minutes south of Vancouver. Breakfast can be enjoyed on board the ferry.
An hour and a half sailing among the Gulf Islands. The outdoor deck is open the whole way — the best spot on the boat for photos and wildlife spotting.
About two and a half hours exploring the Sunken Garden, the Rose Garden, the Japanese and Italian Gardens. There's a café and restaurant on site, plus a very good seed shop.
Lunch on your own, either at the gardens or on the way to Victoria, depending on the group's pace. We'll point you to good options along both routes.
The Inner Harbour, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, the Fairmont Empress and the historic brick-lined streets. Free time to walk around, shop for souvenirs, or enjoy afternoon tea at the Empress.
A stop by the colourful floating houses, where seals often pop up by the dock, and fish-and-chips stands abound.
Crossing back with the sunset over the strait, arriving in Vancouver around 8:30 or 9 pm.
